Whale stranded in Mabay, dies

MAITUM, Sarangani (October 31, 2021) - (L-R) Bantay Dagat member Aquillino Adlaon, community volunteers Fernando Jomar Agoto and Fernando Valderama assist Arianne Shane Nebran, Environmental Management Specialist II, to do the breathing exercise of a stranded two-meter weak and wounded pygmy sperm whale (Kogia breviceps) at Gawad Kalinga Village, Barangay Mabay on October 26. The Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office, Environmental Conservation and Protection Center, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and CENRO-Kiamba immediately responded to the stranded marine mammal. Agoto and Valderama first spotted the helpless stranded whale around 12 in the afternoon of October 25. It was suspected that the whale may be sick or attacked by other large species that drove the whale into the shallow part of the sea. While the whale was still recovering from stress and injuries, the MENRO already sent trained personnel and some have volunteered to watch over the whale 24/7. Unfortunately, the whale died a day after it was rescued. Dr. Roy Mejorada of ECPC has conducted its necropsy but it was inconclusive or failed to provide cause of death.
