Saving a whale

MAITUM, Sarangani (October 31, 2021) - Bernadette Ann Florentin (center), VET II, assisted by Park Chief Maintenance of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Edgar Calderon, collects blood samples from a stranded pygmy sperm whale at Gawad Kalinga Village, Barangay Mabay on October 26. Medical aid to the whale was facilitated by CENRO Kiamba personnel with an instruction through a phone call from Dr. Roy Mejorada, veterinarian of the Environmental Conservation and Protection Center. The stranded pygmy sperm whale has a body circumference of 115 inches and 225 inches from dorsal to tail. The trained personnel from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and CENRO also performed an intubation to help the whale to stay hydrated during its recovery period before releasing it back to its natural habitat. Unfortunately, the whale died a day after it was rescued. Dr. Mejorada conducted a nepcropsy but the result was inconclusive or failed to provide cause of death.
