SAAD project increases food production, decreases poverty

MAITUM, Sarangani (October 20, 2021) – Provincial Agriculturist Jonathan Duhaylungsod inspects a rice miller at Barangay Tuanadatu during the turn-over activity of the post-harvest facilities and other agri-infrastructure projects on October 13. The rice miller is part of the Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) program in Sarangani that aims to increase household food security by increasing food production and farmers income to decrease poverty. As one of the first 10 priority provinces of former Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol, Sarangani has been given an assistance amounting P100 million covering 37 SAAD Barangays with 1,761 upland rice farmers and 860 OPV corn farmers. SAAD-Sarangani project manager Agnes Du said that since SAAD project commenced in 2017 “dako na kaayo ang gipagbag-o sa atong mga farmer beneficiaries under this program.” She added, “some farmers told us na sa una nga wala pa ang implementation sa project, dako na ilang pasalamat nga makakaon og twice a day pero sukad sa pag-abot sa SAAD, thrice a day with meryenda pa ang ilang makaon.” (Jake Narte-Joshua John Pantonial/SARANGANI PROVINCIAL INFORMATION OFFICE)
