Sarangani joins simultaneous launching of DOH’s "PinasLakas" campaign

ALABEL, Sarangani (July 27, 2022) – The municipality of Alabel successfully held the national simultaneous launching of the PinasLakas campaign on July 26 at the Alabel municipal gymnasium. The activity was led by the Department of Health (DOH) Region XII in partnership with the Local Government Units of Sarangani and Alabel as part of the vaccination strategies for COVID-19 in the first 100 days of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

The said campaign is a national vaccination drive which aims to intensify COVID-19 booster shots for the eligible population to provide an extra line of defense against the virus.

"PinasLakas" will be a mass vaccination which targets the 77 million Filipinos in the eligible population or the 90% senior citizens on their first and second doses, and 50% of the ages 12 and above for the booster shots.

DOH XII Regional Director Dr. Aristides Tan reported that only 70.8 million Filipinos were vaccinated during the previous administration.

"Because of this," Tan added, "the PinasLakas campaign was initiated to reach the remaining target population and build the wall of immunity in the country to protect every Filipino against COVID-19."

In his report, Tan said that Region 12 targets at least 73,000 senior citizens for the primary dose of COVID-19 vaccines and at least 9,000 for the booster dose.

He also explained that there is a need for booster shots because, based on studies, four to six months after the last dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, the immune system of an individual "is declining."

Alabel Mayor Vic Paul Salarda, who was also present during the launching, encouraged his constituents to get booster shots.

"This is your chance to help yourselves sa pamamagitan ng pagpapataas ng inyong immune system para malabanan ang COVID-19," said Salarda.

He also disclosed that in Alabel, all those who will be vaccinated will be given five kilos of rice.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Arvin Alejandro updated that as of July 26 this year, Sarangani has only 59% total immunization turnout for the first and second doses for the eligible population.

Dr. Alejandro eyes Governor Rogelio "Ruel" D. Pacquiao’s executive order implementing the Risk-Based Targeted Testing and increasing the awareness campaign to increase the number of vaccinated Sarangans in the province’s fight against COVID-19.

"We will really target the 70% of our population vaccinated because we can only have good herd immunity by reaching this percentage kasama na din yung 70% ng ating senior citizens,” he added.

As of the writing, Alejandro updated that Sarangani is still on Alert Level II "but we are looking into Maitum to be the first town in Sarangani to be on Alert Level 1."

He explained that Maitum has already reached more than 70% of their senior citizen and about 68% of the total population vaccinated.

As of the first semester of 2022, Alejandro updated that PHO has recorded a total of 29 deaths in Sarangani due to COVID-19 of which 60% are unvaccinated. (Joshua John S. Pantonial/SARANGANI PROVINCIAL INFORMATION OFFICE)
