Medical expert shares COVID-19 experience to Sarangani frontliners

ALABEL, Sarangani (April 27, 2020) - A doctor treating COVID-19 patients from a private institution in Luzon with high coronavirus disease (COVID-19) admissions shared his experience to provincial officials, mayors, chief of hospitals, and other frontliners in Sarangani.

The exchange of views with Dr. Edgar Jolly Santos, who is an emergency medicine consultant, was done via Zoom teleconference at the Sarangani’s Provincial Gymnasium on April 23.

The teleconference was aimed at sustaining and further enhancing collective responses of frontline workers in Sarangani against COVID-19.

Governor Steve Chiongbian Solon said “the objective of this teleconference is for our medical frontline workers and para sa atin na nagtatrabaho everyday during this quarantine period” where he pointed out “dapat may firsthand information tayo galing mismo sa isang COVID-19 doctor na araw-araw COVID patients ang hinaharap at kung paano nya pinoprotektahan ang sarili niya."

Dr. Santos was dealing with COVID-19 patients since the fourth case in the country was recorded.

Dr. Santos said he has been a frontline worker since the COVID-19 pandemic started and “catered our first case of COVID in the hospital on the first week of March.”

Since then, he said, “I really see COVID patients. I deal with them and I interact with them.”

Governor Solon prearranged the live stream meeting as he said he noticed people are anxious when going out in public. “I observed na habang lumalabas tayo, may kaba tayo” and stressed on the importance of “practicing proper hygiene, physical distancing na 2-meters minimum and wear our masks.”

He said, “sabi pa nga ni Doc Jolly, if we do this, we will all be safe.”

Dr. Arvin Alejandro, provincial health officer, said “ang dami nating nakuha from this teleconference, like triaging of patients. Nakakuha din tayo ng maraming ideas sa kanya and we are very thankful to our Honorable Governor because he was the one who personally facilitated this Zoom meeting.”

“This is the first type of meeting that was done in Sarangani Province,” where Alejandro said the inputs “will help (us) improve how our system to continuously sustain ‘yung pagiging COVID-free natin.”

The teleconference also highlighted information on non-pharmaceutical measures such as physical distancing, the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) and whole-of-society approaches to mitigate and contain the spread of the virus.

Since the Provincial Ordinance No. 2020-10-078 requiring the mandatory wearing of mask in all public places has been approved, Governor Solon wants to really tighten the policy.

“Wala talagang pwedeng lumabas kung walang mask kasi huhulihin na talaga namin. If we don’t wear mask, we will be transmitting a virus kahit hindi COVID yan to the people around us. So, for safety, kailangan talaga tayong magsuot ng mask,” said Solon.

Dr. Jolly Santos is a good friend of Governor Solon and has been the province’s hospital consultant since 2014.

“I would really like to thank Governor Solon for giving me his full trust to be the spokesperson for this activity as well as to Ma’am Michelle Solon, kasi sila talaga yung naging prayer warriors ko. Their prayers helped me and I would really thank God for keeping me healthy despite the pandemic,” said Santos.

“I would like to immensely thank the Lord kay siya ra jud ang nagluwas sa atong probinsya. He is the main reason why Sarangani is still COVID free,” Solon said. (Joshua John Pantonial/SARANGANI PROVINCIAL INFORMATION OFFICE)
